Fall Breakin' It

We are REALLY enjoying this vacation from school. I didn’t realize how much I would appreciate a few days off! Today was quite the busy day, but it was relaxing at the same time. It started with a big, hot bowl of “pumpkin pie oats” to warm me up and fill my belly.

To make these I cook together 2/3 c. old fashioned oats, 1 c. milk, 1/4 t. salt, 2 t. honey until it’s soft and the liquid is almost completely absorbed. Then I stir in 1/2 c. pumpkin purée (homemade) and top the finished product with chopped pecans and some ground cinnamon. Pie in a bowl, I tell ya!

Then it was off to the Williamsburg Italian Festival!

We went to the festival last year with Jason’s parents and had a great time so we knew we wanted to go again this year. This is our last year in Virginia after all! The festival is full of vendors and winery and classic cars and Italian food. Can’t really go wrong there.

And it’s on my Virginia bucket list to taste the festival’s wines!

And taste I did!

I’m not a huge wine person at all. I never crave wine or come home after a long day and pull out a bottle. But I do enjoy it occasionally. And, more than anything, I’m trying to learn about different wines and which ones I like best so that I can be more informed when I buy or order wine. What I learned today? Merlot and I are not friends. Malbec and I REALLY are not friends. I’m more into white wines for sure, and I think I’m coming around to Sauvignon Blanc as a favorite.

Along with the wines we enjoyed some classic Italian foods. There was not a vegetable in sight!

To be honest, the food wasn’t nearly as good as last year! Bummer. They consolidated the vendors down to only a couple and none of the food seemed that fresh. But it was still pretty good. And the wine had distracted me from the food anyways. 🙂

Afterwards we put in a little volunteer time at our local Obama headquarters (phone baking is NOT fun…in case you were wondering…only worth it for something you believe in) and then it was off to dinner! We decided to check out a new-to-us restaurant called The Cove. For an appetizer we got fried oysters and as my entrée I got a stacked crab and avocado salad. Everything was SO GOOD!

And now it’s time to rest up for tomorrow’s big adventure! Three cheers for days off!

Thanks for reading!
