Oh Hey, Dalai Lama

I know, our lives are so random.

But when you’re offered a chance to see the Dalai Lama, you can’t exactly turn that down! He came to speak at the College and it was worth the time to go and hear him.

He wasn’t at all what I would expect! Humble, light-hearted, and actually really funny! You would hardly know that he’s been a monk all his life! The president of the undergraduate student association gave the Dalai Lama a William & Mary visor, and he actually put it on immediately and wore the silly thing throughout his speech! The students loved it. He was SUCH a sport about everything and just seemed like a truly loving and kind person. He spoke to us about human compassion and focusing on our commonalities as people rather than our differences. Here’s a taste of his wisdom!

I did my best to make subtitles so you guys could understand what he’s saying. Watch it in HD!

He made hilarious jokes, the best of which involved him explaining that makeup on a woman can’t hide an ugly heart and that green eyeshadow “really doesn’t look good”. HAHA!  What a guy. I’m a Christian and don’t follow Buddhism or any other religion besides Christianity, but I respect all religions and truly believe what the Dalai Lama spoke about peace and compassion. I’m glad we went!

In other news, today marks the beginning of FALL BREAK!!!!!! I am beyond excited. To mark the start of this glorious break from the torture known as law school, I made us a nice spread of soul food for dinner.

I made oven fried chicken (for the first time) that came out really well! I started off following a recipe but decided to just go out on my own instead and it exceeded my expectations. I DEFINITELY need to share this recipe with you at some point!

Along with the chicken we had candied yams, collard greens (they had been cooking away in our crockpot since this morning!), and some corn muffins using my favorite cornbread recipe with the addition of some canned sweet corn inside. Awesome meal!

I have SO MANY recipes that I can’t wait to share with you guys now that I’m on break! I love vacation! 😀

Thanks for reading!

My parents always tell the story of when I was little and they went to see the Dalai Lama and I asked, “will there be other animals there?” Classic. So amazing that you got to see him. Happy Fall Break!
