GORP Galore

We’re in for an 8-hour (longer with stops and traffic) road trip tomorrow night. And nothing says long trip like GORP does.

If you’re not down with the hippie/boy scout lingo, Gorp just stands for Good Old Raisins and Peanuts. It’s usually something people pack for hiking and such, but I think it makes a great snack for anytime. While I was at work today I brainstormed things to put in a couple different mixes of Gorp.

I came up with a classic version for the kids

Classic Gorp

  • 2 c. unsalted peanuts
  • 2 c. mini pretzels
  • 1 c. plain m&ms
  • 1 c. raisins

Yeah, yeah, maybe M&Ms don’t make the healthiest snack but it belongs in Gorp. I remember when I was little I would be so annoyed if there weren’t any (or weren’t enough) in my mix.

I made a more “grown up” version, lighter on the M&Ms and heavier on the dried fruit.

Grown Up Gorp

  • 1/2 c. unsalted peanuts
  • 1 c. honey roasted peanuts
  • 1 c. mixed nuts
  • 1 c. banana chips
  • 1 c. coconut flakes or shreds
  • 1 c. mixed dried fruit (I used a mix of raisins, apricots, cherries, pineapple, and apples)
  • 1/2 c. m&ms

Both are delicious, and will be great for the road! I have to admit that I kind of want the kid’s version more because it has more chocolate…but I’ll try to have a balance of both mixes.

Don’t forget about Gorp as a quick and easy snack that is extremely portable. Kids love it. So will you.

My to-do list for the evening includes:

-do laundry

-marinate chicken for tomorrow

-clean out suitcases

-paint Ashley’s nails with Mickey Mouse ears

-play with camera

Wild and crazy night over here. Oh wait, I forgot one.

-dread waking up at 6:30am for work in the morning

I’m off! Thanks for reading!

-Lauren

Thanks so much! Healthy eating certainly is a challenge, and I’m not always the best example, but it’s a challenge that’s worth it!

Yum! Both versions look great, but M&Ms are kind of irresistable πŸ˜› You better post pictures of Ashley’s nails!!

I don’t know why M&Ms are so good, but they just are.

I will definitely post pictures of the Mickey nails! Quite a challenge with a squirming 7 year old, lemme tell ya…

  4. I never knew it was called GORP! I 100% agree that the M&Ms make this stuff, and I was always upset when it was a “healthy” mix (aka no chocolate) when I was little. I may still be a little upset by that today too, haha. πŸ™‚

Thanks for coming by! Yeah there’s nothing quite like the disappointment of trail mix with no chocolate…
