On Green Street

It’s no secret from my recent posts that my diet has been all whacky lately. Between all the traveling and living with my parents, my diet has gone back almost 100% to what it was like before I starting this healthy eating “journey”. Since we are going to be stationary now for a couple weeks, I decided that enough is enough and I need to put my efforts back into eating the way I should be and want to be. This should help:

I just got back from a massive trip to DeKalb Farmer’s Market, and I stocked myself up on some fresh produce and whatnot for the week. I can’t tell you how much I’m going to miss this market when we go back to Virginia in a couple weeks! The prices are amazing and the selection and quality just can’t be beat.

As usual, I got everything I needed and more for under $50. Can’t this place just pick itself up and come with me to law school?!

Earlier today, Jason and I went with my mom and little sister to enjoy an early dinner at an old family favorite, Greenwood’s on Green Street. It’s a farm to table restaurant that serves Southern comfort food in very hearty portions, and my family has been going there for years. My late grandma used to love going to get their delicious roasted duck dinner. Everything about this place screams comfort to me, from the overgrown garden at the entrance to the homey and quirky little decor details throughout the restaurant.

The restaurant proclaims that “Homemade meals are made fresh daily using locally-grown, organic produce, dairy, grains and meats whenever possible. Greenwood’s supports local farms and sustainable agricultural practices as part of our Farm to Table ethic. All of Greenwood’s vegetables are meat and dairy free.” Sounds just about perfect to me.

I wasn’t really in the mood for meat (could it have to do with the pound of crab legs and burger I ate yesterday?…) so I ordered a vegetable plate with collard greens, brown rice and gravy, and cheese grits. All of my sides were delicious but I think it was the greens that really brought it home for me. They had just the right amount of vinegar and other seasonings and had just the slightest amount of sweetness.

Our whole table was very happy with the food. Everything at Green’s is always so fresh tasting, it reminds me of eating a meal straight off the stove at home.

This is as close as it gets to home cooked food at a restaurant, but I want to start getting back to my own home cooked recipes on here! Look out for some exciting (and hopefully healthy) ones in the next few days.
