Decorating our Atlanta Apartment

I’m finally making progress over here! The initial unemployment sting/haze is wearing off, and by that I mean I can actually get things done instead of sitting on the sofa with my dog and mulling things over all day. Since my in-laws are coming to stay with us next weekend, my priority (aside from stuffing my face with doughnuts and job searching) has been getting the apartment settled. The guest room is the first to be done!

Since Ashley (my little sister who lives with my parents about 20 minutes away) will be using this room the most often, I let her choose the color scheme for the guest room. She picked this adorable comforter from Target, and I picked out the other items based on those colors. I wanted the room to feel comfy and cheerful, and I think it definitely does!

I got the bed, sheets, and nightstands from Ikea and the lamps from Target. That little yellow vase on the table is for fresh flowers! And I found a happy home for one of my favorite pieces of art, this gorgeous silk screen that my dad did when he was in art school.

Once I get some wall art for the blank side of the wall facing the bed, this room will be totally done! Hooray!

My next project is the living room, which before this week was completely blank aside from necessary furniture. A couple days ago I filled and “styled” the bookcase next to our television.

It was so fun to arrange all of our photos and random items together to display!

My favorite part is the shadowbox at the bottom! When we first moved to Virginia for law school, we quickly realized that personalized license plates are a MAJOR thing for Virginians. Neither of us is the kind of people to get vanity plates, but we figured since we were only in VA for a short time we should join in the statewide ritual. Being newlyweds and all, my immediate suggestion was our new family name: The Reas! (side note: I think that’s the first time on the blog I ever divulged my last name! WOAH! It’s pronounced “Ray-uh”!). There weren’t enough spaces on the plate to put a gap between ‘The’ and ‘Reas’ so it ended up being one long word. I was sure that people who knew us would get it, but hilariously NO ONE understood what it was supposed to mean! Not even Jason’s parents! We got puzzled looks from our family and friends trying to figure out what it said because it looked so weird. I always ended up saying “It’s our name! The Reas! You can’t tell?!” It continues to be a running joke, and my mom still refers to us as “Thereas”, one word. There was no way I was throwing those plates out after we moved here.

I also made a gallery wall for the huge empty wall behind our sofa!

I’m so into the gallery wall trend. I didn’t want to clutter the space with too many different colors, so I decided to keep it black and white and I LOVE how it’s turning out! I think it needs a some more small pieces to fill the wall a bit more (what do you think?) but I’m really happy with how it looks so far.

That’s it for now! Full house tour coming next week when things are more neat and tidy looking around here! 🙂

I’m done with decorating my place for now. Oddly enough, even though I absolutely love art, I found the whole process of choosing actual art for my home to be quite stressful. I was searching on Art.com and it seriously becomes a bit overwhelming when you kind of have a sense for what you like and nothing really pops out at you at first because there are so many choices. I ended up choosing the most random pics that I never would have pictured (hahaha… no pun intended) myself liking. I chose cherry blossoms for my bedroom and when my brother came over, I could tell he was looking at me like “who are you and what have you done with my sister?” I’m not a girly girl, not a tomboy either but I usually don’t go for things that are overtly pretty. Nonetheless even he had to admit that they are soothing which was my intent – to wake up in a serene environment. Mission accomplished.

In other tangents, that’s too funny about your name. My niece who was born in July is named Réa (with an accent aigu on the “e”) – exact same pronunciation though. 🙂

Ha, that’s funny because I knew your last name but until you wrote about it later down in the page, I was thinking, “I wonder what that license plate means!”

The wall frames are amazing and it compliments the plain white color of your wall. Thank you for sharing this one.
