Recipes for Southern New Year’s Eve

The New Year is approaching quickly!  If you’re like us and love doing the traditional Southern spread to bring luck to your year, here are all the recipes you’ll need to pull of the perfect dinner.

newyearsevecollageEvery item on the table has a meaning behind it, which is part of what makes this traditional meal so special for this time of year. Most Southerners are happy to eat greens or fried chicken any time of year, but when tradition demands that you eat them you really can’t say no. Here’s a list of the traditional menu items along with the symbolism they carry.

Greens: Whether they be collards or turnips or kale, the greens at the meal represent dollar bills to bring you wealth in the new year. (recipe here)

Cornbread: Cornbread symbolizes gold–more wealth and prosperity! (recipe here)

Black-Eyed Peas: These represent coins (I’m noticing a trend here)–MORE wealth and prosperity! (recipe to come soon!)

The other items that are traditionally on the table don’t have specific meanings, they just go well with the meal!

Candied Yams

Buttermilk Biscuits

Hoecakes

Fried Chicken

Macaroni and Cheese

My best buds Emily and KJ are in town for the holiday and I can’t wait for our NYE spread!

I never knew it was a New Year’s tradition to make Black Eyed Peas until a few years ago but I’ve come to love making them! My mom always does a special New Year’s Day dinner and I think she’s thinking surf and turf this year. Yum! Happy New Year’s Eve!
