Chocolate Frozen Greek Yogurt

posted in: Dessert | 13

I don’t know about you, but I eat ice cream and frozen yogurt ALL YEAR LONG. Of course there’s nothing quite like an ice cold cone on a hot summer day, but cold weather never stopped me from enjoying it just the same. To celebrate the ending of summer, I wanted to share this easy but scrumptious recipe with you.

Yogurt is really a miraculous thing. Greek yogurt is beyond miraculous. It’s so low in fat but somehow so creamy and rich tasting. You really don’t need to add anything to it (unlike when you make a milk or cream based ice cream, which generally requires a custard mixture to achieve that level of richness) to make a delicious frozen yogurt.

If you love chocolate (like me) and you love greek yogurt (like me), you will love this. It’s got lots of chocolate flavor but retains the full tanginess of the yogurt.

Chocolate Frozen Greek Yogurt

by Lauren

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 2 hours freezing time

Ingredients (2 cups of frozen yogurt)

  • 2 c. plain greek yogurt (I highly recommend Fage brand)
  • 1/4 c. milk
  • 1/3 c. cocoa powder
  • 1/2 c. sugar (you can add more or less to taste)
  • real chocolate syrup (optional)

Instructions

In a small bowl, heat the milk to lukewarm in the microwave then whisk in the cocoa powder and sugar.

In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk the greek yogurt on its own until it becomes fluffier.

Slowly pour the chocolate mixture into the yogurt while whisking it until you achieve a consistent brown color in the yogurt.

Set the bowl aside in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.

Freeze according to your ice cream maker’s instructions.

Remove the yogurt from the ice cream maker and put it into a freezer-safe container. Put in the freezer to harden further for another 2 hours.

Scoop, top with chocolate syrup (optional), and enjoy!

If you have an ice cream maker, this is totally worth it. And if you don’t, try this!

And then you can douse it in a gratuitous amount of chocolate syrup like I did. Or not. That’s just how I roll.

Thanks for reading!

OMG. LoPro. This sounds awesome. Confirming once again that you are amazing… and that I need an ice cream maker. Glad you busted it back out again! Will you make pumpkin flavored fro-yo at some point? I’m on a major pumpkin kick right now and I feel like pumpkin greek fro yo would be awesome! Really any pumpkin recipe is awesome… but I want to see more… once you embrace that fall is indeed here.

I love this, but wondering how I would achieve this without an ice cream maker? Would it be an icy mess? I’m considering how it would be for traveling and eating. Can’t carry appliances in my carry on (without amassing fees). Beautiful PHOTOGRAPHY! Made me hungry.

Any idea of this will work with almond milk?

I LOVE ice cream but I’ve been a low-carber for a while. I make my greek style yogurt and then froyo with it. Creamy, chocolate froyo without the carbs? Easy. Heat half of a cup of heavy cream in the microwave, then put unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and Splenda sweetener to taste. Whisk well and let it cool before incorporating the ”syrup” to the yogurt. Next step: ice cream maker!
NOTE: Greek yogurt is on the tart side, so the chocolate -cream mixture has to be sweeter so you can end up with ice cream-like froyo.
Can you imagine enjoying a full cup of this decadent treat for less than 7g of carbs and all the benefits of the full-of-protein greek yogurt??? PRICELESS.

I stumbled across this recipe on Pinterest and that photo just kept drawing me in. I gave it a go on the weekend and it has been an absolute hit. My kids love it, the littlest in particular, and I just adore that tang you get from the Greek Yogurt. I wrote about it on my blog also thenewgoodlife.wordpress.com. I’m now going to check out the rest of your blog, it looks great. Being an Australian I know little about soul food so I’m sure it will be an education – already I’ve come across things I’ve no idea of (grits??). Thanks for the recipe again, my ice cream maker will be getting quite a workout I think.
