WARA Restaurant Weeks 2012: Part Three

This week we got some great news. Jason was offered a summer position with a Georgia district attorney’s office! The summer after your second year of law school is really important in terms of permanent job opportunities, so I couldn’t be happier that he found something this soon. To celebrate, we took another opportunity to enjoy Restaurant Weeks and head to Baker’s Crust, a restaurant about 10 minutes from our house on the edge of the New Town area.

To be honest (which I always am 😉 ), we were quite skeptical about going to this place because the parking lot is never that full and it has very mixed reviews online. But we figured that since they were having a Restaurant Weeks special it was a good time to try it.

As you can see, the restaurant was mostly empty (it was a Saturday night) but we loved the contemporary atmosphere. It also had great lighting (you know you’re a crazy food blogger when the first thing you look for in a restaurant is how good the light is for photos)!

The special was a 3 course dinner for $20.10, and for the starter course we ordered Fried Calamari with Sweet Chili Sauce and the Tavern Chips with grated mozzarella.

The calamari was pretty good, not the best we’ve ever had but not the worst either. The chips were delicious but wooahhh the portion size was quite overwhelming! I made sure to stop before I was too full because it was only the beginning of the meal! For my entrée I ordered the Asiago Chicken (“grilled chicken breast, shiitake mushrooms, hickory smoked bacon, oven-roasted tomatoes and asparagus, with an asiago cream sauce over orzo pasta”). It was a tasty dish but definitely a tad heavy on the cream sauce. I loved the asparagus and the other vegetables though, they were very flavorful.

Jason ordered the Drunkin’ Tomato and Cheddar Burger. He said “it was pretty delicious, but I didn’t like the tomatoes on it”. The words of a true critic.

By the time dessert rolled around we were pretty stuffed, so we opted to take one of our desserts to-go and eat one in the restaurant. We picked Jason’s dessert to have there, which was the Jamaican Crepe (“Flambeed bananas in rum and brown sugar. Served with a generous scoop of Edy’s Vanilla Bean ice cream and topped with toasted coconut, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream.”).

It was as good as it looks and the portion was HUGE so we were very glad we only tried to tackle one dessert at a time! Edy’s Vanilla Bean just happens to be my favorite ice cream flavor of all time, so I was more than happy to eat my share. It went so well with the delicious rum sauce and bananas.  We left totally stuffed!

The food was solid and the service was wonderful, and while we wouldn’t run back for dinner we are definitely planning on trying them for breakfast and trying some of their bakery items. I think many of the online reviews are a bit harsh so I’m glad we decided not to take their word for it and try it on our own. A few hours after we got home I took a few bites of the Double Chocolate Layer Cake I took home with me and it was delicious!

In fact, I think I’m going to go eat the rest of it right now!

Thanks for reading!
